A Legacy of Pioneering Business Leadership
The School of Business and Technology at Huston-Tillotson University carries forward a 150-year legacy of economic self-determination and institutional excellence. Our story is one of two visionary institutions merging to create a powerhouse of African American education in the heart of Texas.
The Foundations of Excellence
Huston-Tillotson’s roots trace back to the late 19th century, born from the conviction that education is the ultimate engine for social and economic mobility:
- Tillotson College (1875): Founded by the American Missionary Association, it quickly became a beacon for intellectual rigor.
- Samuel Huston College (1876): Established by the Methodist Episcopal Church, it focused on empowering students with the skills needed to lead in a rapidly industrializing world. This union created a unique intellectual ecosystem where the values of faith, community, and commerce intersect.
In 1952, these two pillars merged to form Huston-Tillotson College, later becoming a University in 2005. This union created a unique intellectual ecosystem where the values of faith, community, and commerce intersect.
A Century of "Business as Mission"
Long before the modern "Social Impact" or "ESG" movements, HT was practicing business with a purpose. Our founders understood that for the Central Texas community to thrive, it needed leaders who could navigate the complexities of the marketplace while upholding the highest ethical standards.
